SERVING CHICAGO’S NORTHWEST SUBURBS
Sports Physicals for Student Athletes
Before your child can take the field, court, or pool, they need a pre-participation physical exam (PPE). At Associates in Pediatrics, we provide thorough sports physicals for student athletes across Elgin, Dundee, Hampshire, Algonquin, and the surrounding northwest suburbs – helping families get their kids cleared and ready to compete.
What is a Sports Physical?
A sports physical – formally called a pre-participation physical examination (PPE) – is a medical evaluation required by Illinois schools and most athletic programs before a student athlete can participate in organized sports. The goal is to identify any medical conditions that could put your child at risk during athletic activity.
What Does a Sports Physical Include?
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Medical history review – prior injuries, surgeries, chronic conditions, family cardiac history
- Heart and lung exam – checking for murmurs or other concerns that could affect activity
- Blood pressure and pulse measurement
- Vision screening
- Musculoskeletal assessment – strength, flexibility, and range of motion
- Discussion of nutrition, hydration, and injury prevention for student athletes
When Should I Schedule My Child’s Sports Physical?
We recommend scheduling your child’s sports physical at least 4 to 6 weeks before their season begins. Don’t wait until the week before school starts – late summer appointments fill up quickly across the northwest suburbs.

frequently asked questions
My child had a well child visit recently. Do they still need a sports physical?
Often, yes. A well child visit and a sports physical serve different purposes. If your child’s annual visit was very recent, call our office – we can help determine whether a separate sports physical is needed.
What should I bring to the sports physical?
Bring your child’s insurance card, a list of any current medications, and the school’s sports physical form if your school has a specific required form.
Do you offer sports physicals for club or travel sports?
Yes. We provide sports physical exams for all types of organized athletics – not just school-based sports.
Can my child be disqualified from sports by a sports physical?
Disqualification is rare. In most cases, if we identify a concern, we work with you and your child to address it so they can participate safely – sometimes with modifications or additional evaluation.
