When to Call the Pediatrician

Call Associates in Pediatrics immediately if:
- Your child is under 2 months old and has any fever above 100.4°F
- Your child is over 2 months with a fever that causes sluggishness and lasts more than two days
- Your child of any age has a fever of 104°F or higher
- Your child is experiencing difficulty breathing
- Your child complains of severe or concentrated abdominal pain
- Your child has signs of dehydration (no tears, dry mouth, not urinating)
- Something about your child’s condition is worrying you – trust that feeling

When should I bring my child in for a sick visit?
If your child has symptoms that concern you, a high or persistent fever, difficulty breathing, or is under two months old with any fever, call us right away.
Should I go to urgent care or my pediatrician?
Your regular pediatrician is almost always the better choice. We have your child’s full medical history on file and are trained specifically in pediatric care.
What if the office is closed?
We have an on-call physician available 24/7. Call our main line for after-hours guidance.
Does my child need antibiotics?
Not always. Many childhood illnesses, including most colds, the flu, and some ear infections, are caused by viruses that antibiotics cannot treat. Our providers follow evidence-based guidelines and will prescribe antibiotics only when they are genuinely needed, to protect your child and limit antibiotic resistance.
When is a fever dangerous in children?
Any fever in a baby under 2 months old warrants an immediate call. For older children, fevers above 104°F or fevers accompanied by lethargy, difficulty breathing, severe headache, or stiff neck require prompt attention. When in doubt, call us – that’s what we’re here for.
Can my child go to school or daycare?
As a general rule, children should stay home until they’ve been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, and until vomiting or diarrhea has resolved. Your provider will give you specific guidance at the visit.
How long does recovery usually take?
Most common childhood illnesses resolve within 7-10 days. If your child’s symptoms worsen after the first few days or don’t improve after 10 days, call our office for a follow-up evaluation.
