Preventative Care for Infants, Children & Teens

Well Child Visits in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago

Routine well child visits are one of the most effective tools we have for keeping children healthy, catching concerns early, and making sure every child is growing and developing exactly as they should.

What is a Well Child Visit?

A well child visit – sometimes called a wellness exam or annual checkup – is a scheduled appointment with your pediatrician designed specifically to assess your child’s health when they are not sick. These visits give us the opportunity to track physical growth, evaluate developmental milestones, administer age-appropriate vaccines, and answer any questions you have about your child’s health or behavior.

Think of well child visits as your family’s proactive partnership with your pediatric team. When we see your child regularly, we build a complete picture of their health over time – which means we’re better equipped to notice when something is off.

Why Well Child Visits Matter

CARE THAT GROWS WITH YOUR CHILD

It might feel counterintuitive to schedule a doctor’s appointment when your child seems perfectly healthy. But preventive care is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your child’s long-term health. Regular well child visits allow us to:

Detect developmental delays or health concerns before they become serious

Keep your child current on life-saving immunizations

Build a consistent relationship with a provider who knows your child

Give you trusted, evidence-based guidance at every stage of parenting

What to Expect at Your Child’s Wellness visit

At Associates in Pediatrics, we believe the best time to see your pediatrician isn’t just when your child is sick – it’s when they’re well. Our board-certified pediatricians and nurse practitioners provide comprehensive wellness exams for children from infancy through adolescence, right here in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs.

During a well child visit at Associates in Pediatrics, you can expect our team to:

  • Measure height, weight, and head circumference (for infants)
  • Track growth on developmental charts over time
  • Assess developmental milestones appropriate to your child’s age
  • Administer vaccines according to the CDC and AAP immunization schedule
  • Screen for vision, hearing, and behavioral concerns
  • Review your child’s medical and family history
  • Walk you through what to expect in the next stage of development
  • Answer your questions about nutrition, sleep, behavior, and more

frequently asked questions

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE A WELL CHILD VISIT?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends well child visits at the following ages: newborn, 3–5 days, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 24 months, 30 months, and then annually from age 3 through young adulthood. We follow these guidelines and will remind you when your child is due.

DOES MY CHILD NEED A WELL VISIT IF THEY'RE HEALTHY?

Yes. Well child visits are specifically designed for healthy children. These appointments allow us to track your child’s development over time, administer vaccines on schedule, and catch any concerns early before symptoms appear.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY CHILD'S WELL VISIT APPOINTMENT?

Bring your child’s insurance card, a list of any medications they’re taking, and any questions you have. If your child is new to our practice, bring previous medical records or vaccine history if available.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Well child visits are scheduled in advance so we can provide your family with appropriate, unhurried attention.

HOW LONG DOES A WELL CHILD VISIT TAKE?

Most well child visits take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your child’s age and any additional concerns. We encourage parents to take their time – there’s no such thing as too many questions.

CAN I SCHEDULE A SICK VISIT AT THE SAME TIME AS MY WELL CHILD VISIT?

In most cases, we prefer to keep these visits separate so that your child receives focused, unhurried attention for each. If you have concerns, call our office and we’ll find the right appointment type for your child’s needs.
