FOR INFANTS AND NEW PARENTS

NEWBORN CARE IN NORTHWEST CHICAGO SUBURBS

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most extraordinary experiences of a family’s life and one of the most overwhelming. At Associates in Pediatrics, we’re honored to be your partner from the very beginning. Our board-certified pediatricians provide comprehensive newborn care for infants from birth through the end of the first year, with the warmth and expertise that northern Illinois families have counted on for more than 40 years.

What is Newborn Care?

Newborn care refers to the specialized medical attention infants need in the days, weeks, and months following birth. The first year of life is the most rapid period of growth and development a child will ever experience – and regular monitoring by a trusted pediatric provider is essential to making sure your baby is thriving.

At Associates in Pediatrics, our newborn care includes everything from your baby’s first post-hospital checkup through the 12-month well visit, with guidance on feeding, sleep, growth, developmental milestones, and immunizations along the way.

When Should We Make Our Appointment?

NEWBORN VISIT SCHEDULING

We recommend scheduling your baby’s first pediatric appointment before your due date whenever possible. This allows our team to complete your registration in advance and ensures your newborn’s first visit is scheduled before you leave the hospital. Your baby’s first newborn visit is typically recommended 3-5 days after hospital discharge, depending on your baby’s age, feeding, weight, and overall health.

If your baby has already been born and you haven’t chosen a pediatrician, don’t worry! Contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll help schedule your newborn’s first visit and answer any questions you may have.

After the first visit, we follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommended schedule for newborn and infant visits. Most families can expect appointments at: 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. We’ll remind you when each visit is due.

What to Expect at Your Newborn’s visit

Our newborn care visits are designed to give you both medical monitoring for your baby and real support for you as a new parent. At each visit, our team will:

    • Weigh your baby and track growth on standard pediatric charts
    • Check for jaundice, especially in the first week
    • Assess feeding – whether breastfeeding, formula, or a combination
    • Monitor umbilical cord and circumcision healing (if applicable)
    • Evaluate developmental milestones appropriate to your baby’s age
    • Administer age-appropriate vaccines on the recommended schedule
    • Screen for postpartum concerns in new parents
    • Answer every question you have – no matter how small it seems

    frequently asked questions

Is it normal for my newborn to sleep so much?

Yes – newborns typically sleep 14 to 17 hours per day! What matters most is that your baby is waking to feed every 2 to 3 hours and producing adequate wet diapers. We’ll discuss safe sleep practices at your first visit.

When does my baby need their first vaccines?

The Hepatitis B vaccine is typically given at the hospital at birth. Additional vaccines begin at the 2-month visit. We follow the CDC and AAP immunization schedule and will walk you through what to expect at each step.

How do I know if my baby is eating enough?

A well-fed newborn will have at least 6 wet diapers per day after the first week and will regain birth weight by 2 weeks. At each visit, we evaluate feeding in detail and can connect you with lactation support resources if needed.

How much weight loss is normal for a newborn?

Most newborns lose up to 10% of their birth weight in the first few days. Most babies regain this weight and return to their birth weight by about 10 to 14 days. We monitor this closely at your first few visits.
